Composting in Bottles

This classroom kit is not available at this time.

Reuse materials to build your own mini-composting container and learn the difference between "environmentally friendly" (biodegradable) and "environmentally unfriendly" (non-biodegradable).


​Appropriate age/skill level: 5th grade
Expected time to complete: 45-60 minutes (day 1) plus 10-15 minutes per day (days 2-5)



Materials

Per student: 2-liter bottle, 3 cups garden soil, ¾ cup water, 1 sheet paper, 2 lettuce leaves, 1 apple, 2-3 plastic yogurt cups, rubber or latex gloves, 2 spoons or Popsicle sticks, masking tape

Tools

measuring cups (sizes: 1 cup, ½ cup, ¼ cup),  marker or pen
​Procedure
Students construct composting containers and observe the results over several days.
